Kilmainham Gaol

From its construction in 1792 until it's decommissioning in 1924, Kilmainham Gaol has witnessed some of the most heroic and tragic events in Irish history. Most notably it was used by the British to intern many participants in the failed Easter Rising of 1916. Fourteen of the leaders were shot in the prison yard. A visit begins with an excellent audio-visual introduction, followed by a tour that ends with an atmospheric visit to the prison yard.

Temple Bar

Shantalla Lodge is close to The Temple Bar Area. This area has a long and infamous history; it was the property of the Augustinian Friars for three centuries until 1537 when it was confiscated by King Henry V111 during the dissolution of the monasteries. By the 18th century, its trademark narrow streets began to take shape, along with the disreputable nature of its many pubs. In the 1960s, the Temple Bar area had fallen into such a state of disrepair that it was earmarked for demolition. However, before this could happen, Temple Bar begin to reinvent itself as a thriving cultural quarter. It has now been totally redeveloped and it is an ideal place to dine, shop, and see street entertainment. It has many clubs and pubs.
